June 17 - Departure from Vancouver

Because we were unwilling to spend an outrageous amount of money on shipboard internet access, we wound up waiting until now to post pictures from our excursion. On Wednesday morning, June 17, we loaded up onto a motor coach and headed for Vancouver. After passing through Canadian customs, we arrived at the port and loaded onto the motor ship Volendam for our cruise to three ports in south-eastern Alaska: Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan. By 6:00 PM we were heading out of port; here's Anita leaning on the rail as we've just passed under Lion's Gate Bridge:

I couldn't resist a pic of this fishing boat headed out of the port.

Years ago we used to go to North Vancouver to ride from there to Squamish on a passenger train behind the Royal Hudson steam locomotive, # 2860. It ran north along Howe Sound, seen here as we head out of Burrard Inlet.

The Winter Olympic games will be held in the Vancouver area in 2010. This mountain is (I think) Whistler, where some of the action will take place.

This cloud-shrouded sunset capped the day.

We will spend tomorrow cruising the inside passage on our way north.
